Impactful Diabetes Education Workshops take place in Dubbo

On Friday 12 June, Rural Doctors Network hosted the Diabetes Education Workshop in Dubbo – the sixth clinical workshop delivered through the partnership between the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council, the University of Technology Sydney and the Care Partnership Diabetes (CP-D) Program across Western and Far West NSW.

A total of 38 people attended the workshop, including 17 Aboriginal attendees, which was designed to strengthen the diabetes workforce by providing hands-on, clinical education, practical skill development and opportunities for professional networking.

Delivering the workshop locally enabled health professionals to access high-quality diabetes training while building confidence, capability and local capacity in diabetes care across rural and remote communities.

Later in the day, Rural Doctors Network then hosted the Western Diabetes Network Evening. This brought together 28 members of the diabetes workforce from across Western NSW for an evening of consultation and the opportunity to explore the successes and challenges of mentoring and supporting the diabetes workforce in rural and remote communities.

Rural Doctors Network’s Senior Project Coordinator for the WNSW Collaborative Commissioning Partnership, Leah Pascoe, said a key theme that emerged from the evening was the value of the network in connecting professionals across a geographically vast region.

“The network continues to play an important role in reducing professional isolation and fosters collaboration, workforce development and peer support among diabetes health professionals,” Leah said.

“Attendees shared examples of how the relationships, developed through the network, have supported workforce recruitment and have enabled organisations to identify and connect with suitably qualified diabetes professionals when opportunities arise,” she said.

“It was noted that without the network, many of these connections and opportunities would be far more difficult to achieve,” Leah said.

A special acknowledgement was also given to Deb Beahan for her many years of dedicated service supporting Aboriginal communities and improving diabetes outcomes across Western NSW.
