Strong Eyes, Strong Mob, Your Vision Matters

04th September 2025

This video was filmed at the Dubbo Regional Aboriginal Medical Service as part of a collaborative effort to promote eye health among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It features insights from an Aboriginal GP, a visiting optometrist, and an Aboriginal community member with lived experience, highlighting the importance of early and accessible eye checks.

The Western NSW Eye Health Partnership (WEHP) supported the development of this resource, with funding provided by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing. “This health promotion video on Aboriginal eye checks is designed to raise awareness, build confidence, and encourage earlier engagement with eye care, addressing a key barrier to preventing avoidable vision loss in Aboriginal communities," says WEHP Senior Project Officer Jessica Rae.

"By sharing messages directly from Aboriginal health professionals, visiting optometrists, and community voices, this video provides culturally safe and trusted information that supports people to act on their eye health," Jessica says."This video is an action item from the Western NSW Eye Health Partnership Strategic Outcomes Roadmap. By strengthening community education and awareness, embedding prevention and early intervention into routine health care, the WNSW Eye Health Partnership supports Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services to deliver culturally responsive pathways to eye care."

The WNSW Eye Health Partnership is funded by The Fred Hollows Foundation.
