Enhancing eye care empowers remote communities

21st May 2025

For the community served by Cummeragunja Housing and Development Aboriginal Corporation, access to specialised optometry services has always been a challenge. However, thanks to the dedication of Optometrist, John De Francesco and the support of the Visiting Optometrists Scheme (VOS), this community is now benefiting from significantly enhanced eye care services.

As a passionate optometrist with a commitment to improving health outcomes in remote communities, John De Francesco recognised the critical need for high-quality eye care. Recently, through VOS funding, he secured advanced optometry equipment which has dramatically improved the services provided at the Cummeragunja Housing and Development Aboriginal Corporation

The newly acquired equipment includes state-of-the-art retinal cameras, portable slit lamps, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) devices. These tools allow for detailed imaging of the eye, which is essential for detecting serious conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Early detection of these conditions is crucial for preventing vision loss and ensuring timely treatment.

At a recent clinic, the new equipment made a significant impact by enabling the early identification of macular degeneration in a patient during a routine check-up. This early detection allowed for immediate treatment, potentially saving the patient’s vision.

The benefits of these equipment upgrades extend beyond individual cases. By providing high-quality care locally, John and the VOS team have reduced the need for patients to travel long distances for eye care. This leads to better health outcomes and an improved sense of wellbeing within the community.

These clinics are not just about treating eye conditions; they are about empowering the Cummeragunja community with access to essential care. The investment in new equipment is already making a positive difference in people's lives.

John De Francesco’s work at the Cummeragunja Housing and Development Aboriginal Corporation exemplifies his passion for rural healthcare. The support from the VOS is ensuring that residents receive the eye care they need and deserve. This story is a testament to the positive impact that targeted investments and dedicated healthcare professionals can have on the health and wellbeing of remote communities.

VOS is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care (DoHAC) and administered by RDN in NSW and ACT.
