Advanced Life Support Workshops hosted ahead of Refresher Conference at Port Macquarie

31st March 2025

Advanced Life Support (ALS) workshops were held at Rydges Port Macquarie for doctors from around the region on Thursday and Friday, ahead of the Refresher Conference. Port Macquarie provided a stunning backdrop for the training, and participants could conveniently access multiple upskilling opportunities.

The ALS 1 & 2 workshops were facilitated by Emergency Medicine for General Practitioners (EMGP), and are designed to enhance skills, knowledge, and confidence in managing medical emergencies, including cardiac arrest and learning to recognise, assess, and immediately manage deteriorating patients.

“Facilitating the Australian Resuscitation Council's Advanced Life Support Level 2 course for doctors in rural NSW is crucial,” says EMGP’s Louise Spain. “By offering this training locally, doctors can enhance their skills without the need for extensive travel.

“This initiative ensures that rural communities have immediate access to well-trained professionals, who can provide critical emergency care, thereby improving patient outcomes and survival rates. It strengthens healthcare infrastructure in rural areas, enhancing the overall health and well-being of these communities.”

RDN’s Education Services Manager, Arna Wotherspoon, concurred. “Knowing our rural communities have access to highly skilled professionals, ready to provide exceptional emergency care, is incredibly rewarding,” she said. “Bringing essential training like this to Port Macquarie, alongside other valuable learning opportunities, not only supports GPs' professional development but strengthens the entire rural healthcare network.”
