Recognition for Telehealth Speech Pathology Pilot work

21st May 2025

Last year, we wrote of a successful collaboration between RDN, Griffith Aboriginal Medical Service (GAMS) and private allied health organisation Umbo, in delivering an innovative Outreach telehealth speech pathology service to the community in Griffith.

The initiative was led at GAMS by Allied Health Assistant Cristie Simpson, who we are pleased to report has now been recognised for this work with an “Emerging Leader Award”, at the Primary Healthcare Awards, hosted by Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN), late last year.

The program offers online appointments and play therapy, and Cristie conducted assessments and facilitated therapy.

MPHN reported that Ms Simpson said it had been a wonderful journey to re-establish speech therapy services at GAMS.

“I would like to thank our management and staff at our service,’ Ms Simpson said. ‘I would also like to thank the Rural Doctors Network for joining us with Umbo and speech pathologist Michaela Thompson, who have all been an absolute pleasure to work with to create this program for the children in our community.”

The aim of the program is to increase access to a range of ear and hearing health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, youth and young adults (0-21 years) for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of ear and hearing health conditions. There are no MMM location restrictions to access this service. The program is one of the Australian Government's Outreach programs administered in NSW and the ACT by RDN.
