24th February 2025
Over the weekend, RDN’s Future Workforce Manager, Chris Russell and Program Lead, Sam Zelinski, represented RDN in Perth for the first National Rural Health Student Network’s (NRHSN) Council for 2025.
RDN is the administrator of the NRHSN, on behalf of the Rural Workforce Agencies Network – (RWAN) and for the first time in close to a decade, Western Australia was the host state for Council.
Whadjuk and Balladong Elder, Freda Ogilvie performed a Welcome to Country on Saturday morning and shared some insights based on her life and experiences before NRHSN Chair, Conor Mcevoy explained that Council 1 was all about setting the stage for the year ahead and announced the theme - ‘Leading With pUrpose’.
“Our aim is to empower you to step into your roles as leaders, discover what lights you up, and take meaningful steps toward your goals,” Conor said.
A number of guest speakers addressed the group, with the first keynote address by Dr Kim Isaacs, a Yawuru, Karajarri and Noongar woman from the Kimberley and South-West region of Western Australia who works as a General Practitioner and has a strong background in rural and remote medicine and Aboriginal primary health care. This was followed by addresses from Dr Bek Ledingham, a former NRHSN Executive, and Libby Stearne, a Royal Flying Doctor Service Retrieval Nurse.
Across the two days, a number of activities and workshops also took place as the group was encouraged to build their skills and knowledge, forge connections and, of course, have fun.
