National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week 2026: All In

25th May 2026
Tomorrow, 26 May 2026, is National Sorry Day. The following day commences National Reconciliation Week (NRW), running from 27 May to 3 June 2026.

Tomorrow, 26 May 2026, is National Sorry Day. It marks the parliamentary submission of the 1997 Bringing Them Home Report; the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families. The landmark report drew on 500 testimonies from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and made 54 recommendations for healing and reconciliation in response to the forcible removal and mistreatment of Indigenous children from their families and communities, known as the Stolen Generations.

The following day commences National Reconciliation Week (NRW), running from 27 May to 3 June 2026. NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision – are commemorated during NRW.

This years’ theme, All In, focuses on the encouragement of all Australians to commit to taking action toward reconciliation – a reminder that “reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change”.
